Rich Dutch Colonies at Stake

Illustrated by Howard Burke for the front page of the San Francisco Examiner Pictorial Review on 20 October 1940, this colour pictorial map surveys the eastern hemisphere, centred on Southeast Asia, China and the Dutch East Indies. Japan and Japanese-occupied areas are marked in red, while pictographs and a legend flag military bases and strategic routes. An inset shows Singapore, and a vignette of elephants and a temple sits in the lower- left corner, beneath the headline "Rich Dutch Colonies at Stake. Will Japan Try to Take Them? Will the United States Defend Them?"
