Unveiling the Mysteries of the Indies

This satirical print marks the adoption of the Indies Accountability Act (Indische comptabiliteitswet), which placed the colonial budget on a statutory footing. A curtain is drawn aside to reveal a large statue of a Buddhist deity seated atop the treasury chest. It was issued as a plate in the weekly De Nederlandsche Spectator, no. 12, dated 19 March 1864.
