Tropical Woe

This satirical cartoon from De Notenkraker depicts NSB leader Anton Mussert pleading with the Governor-General to be denied access to the Dutch East Indies. Using irony and exaggeration, Albert Hahn Jr. critiques the contradictions and opportunism within Dutch fascist politics of the 1930s. By situating Mussert in a colonial context, the cartoon exposes anxieties around power, exclusion, and authority, while highlighting how colonial territories were entangled with domestic political struggles in the Netherlands.
