The Volcano

This political cartoon by Leo Jordaan depicts a volcano erupting violently with the caption, “…and Indie dances!” The illustration serves as a metaphor for the volatile tensions within the Dutch East Indies under colonial rule. While the Netherlands attempted to maintain control, Indonesia, referred to here as “Indie”, is portrayed as caught in the fiery turmoil of change and resistance.
