The Sultan of Atapoepoe

This satirical postcard, with text “He het gendre een boek gelese over de Sultan van Atapoepoe” (“He hasn’t read a book about the Sultan of Atapoepoe”), combines humor and commentary on colonial-era military life. Created during the Indonesian–Dutch conflict, it reflects the Dutch forces’ perception of their role in the Indies, often portrayed through light-hearted yet politically charged illustrations distributed to soldiers and civilians alike.
