The Slave Ship

In this political cartoon by Johan Braakensiek, a Black man, identified in the caption as "Uncle Tom," appeals to the Dutch Maiden — the personification of the Netherlands — to stop using slave ships in the Dutch East Indies now that slavery has been abolished. To the left stands Insulinde, the personification of the Indies, with a group of Indonesian figures. It was published as a supplement to De Amsterdammer on 30 December 1894.
