The Peacemakers Were Instructed

This political cartoon features Eduard Douwes Dekker—better known by his pen name Multatuli—exclaiming, “All right, all right, all right! But... the Javanese are being abused!” Referencing his famous critique of colonial abuses in Max Havelaar, the cartoon comments on the hypocrisy and contradictions in Dutch efforts toward post-war peace, while Javanese people continued to suffer under colonial oppression.
