The Native Buffalo
In this political cartoon by Johan Braakensiek, a large water buffalo (karbouw) marked "Sarekat Islam" is the centre of a struggle: Eduard Douwes Dekker, Willem Vliegen, Willem Hendrik Bogaardt, Jan Gerrit Scheurer and Conrad van Deventer try to stop Minister of Colonies Thomas Bastiaan Pleyte from leading the animal to the slaughterhouse. Sarekat Islam (the Islamic Union), founded in 1912, was a large nationalist organisation in the Dutch East Indies. The print was published as a supplement to De Amsterdammer on 23 November 1913.
