The Land of Eternal Summer

This picture postcard, issued by the Official Tourist Bureau in the 1920s, promoted Java as a travel destination under the banner "The Garden of the East: Java, The Land of Eternal Summer." Its text advertised the island's draws, starting from the famous Hindu ruins, the botanical garden at Buitenzorg (present-day Bogor), thirty active volcanoes, "splendid motoring," and rail and steamship connections with hotels of modern comfort, noting that Java lay only forty hours from Singapore, with enquiries directed to the Official Tourist Bureau at Weltevreden.
