Telephone with the Indies

This poster promotes the newly available telephone service between the Netherlands and the Dutch East Indies, made possible after the introduction of a direct radiotelephone connection in 1929. Although the technology marked a major advance in long-distance communication, the cost remained prohibitively high: a 3 minutes call to Java cost 33 guilders, more than a skilled worker earned in a week.
