The Aceh War was a long conflict between the Dutch and the Sultanate of Aceh in northern Sumatra. It began after a Dutch-British treaty in 1871 gave the Dutch influence over the region. Although the Dutch seized the palace in 1873, local resistance continued through guerrilla warfare. The war drained resources and sparked criticism back home. With advice from scholar Snouck Hurgronje and new military strategies, Dutch forces under J.B. van Heutsz eventually defeated Aceh by 1904, completing Dutch control over the region.
