Lie Detector from the Netherlands
This political cartoon by Charles Boost, humorously imagines a "lie detector" from the Netherlands being used to assess key international figures. Depicted in the cartoon are Indonesia’s President Sukarno, U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, and Vice President Richard Nixon. The cartoon reflects the tense geopolitical climate following Indonesia’s transfer of sovereignty and the arrest of Léon Jungschlaeger—former Dutch military intelligence chief—who was accused of conspiracy against the Indonesian state. Jungschlaeger died on April 19, 1954, before his trial concluded.
