Invisible Danger

Produced by the army information service (Legervoorlichtingsdienst), this poster highlights the dangers Dutch soldiers met in the tropics, not only the war, but the unfamiliar surroundings and climate. Alongside guidance on hygiene and warnings about sexually transmitted diseases, the service stressed protection against illness, here promoting vaccination. A dark-blue background evokes night and its unseen threats, while a large mosquito dominates the image as a stand-in for malaria, a disease that could prove fatal.
