In Remembrance of My Overseas Service

This photograph album documents the overseas service of a Dutch soldier during the Indonesian War of Independence (1948– 1949). The cover features batik-inspired decoration and a central wajang (shadow puppet) motif. Rather than depicting combat, the photographs focus on daily military life: patrols, moments of leisure, and interactions with the local population. Many images are dated between July 1948 and May 1949, offering a personal, ground- level perspective on Dutch military actions during the final years of colonial rule.
