In Java

This sheet music titled In Java presents an “original Java dance” adapted for European audiences in the early 20th century. The composition reinterprets Java as a source of novelty and rhythm within Western music and dance culture. While referencing Java by name, the piece reflects a stylized and romanticized European imagination of the colony rather than an authentic representation of Javanese musical traditions, revealing how colonial places were transformed into cultural motifs for entertainment and consumption.
