GANEFO I: Onward! No Retreat!
GANEFO, an international sports event established by President Soekarno, was held in Jakarta from November 10-22, 1963, as an alternative to the Olympics. GANEFO I was created in response to criticism of the 1962 Asian Games, where Indonesia's exclusion of Israel and Taiwan led to its suspension from the IOC. With the motto "Move Forward, Never Retreat," GANEFO invited the People's Republic of China and third-world countries to participate. (Banindro, 2019)
