Chinese Unrest in the Dutch East Indies

In this political cartoon by Johan Braakensiek, Alexander Idenburg, Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies, finds a lock of hair in his food while dining at table with Insulinde, the personification of the Indies, who tells him they are "wild hairs." To the left stands a Chinese servant whose queue (the braided tail of hair) has been cut off. The scene alludes to how the Chinese revolution of 1911–1912 stirred nationalism among the Chinese population of the Dutch East Indies. It was published as a supplement to De Amsterdammer on 3 March 1912.
